Do you remember the time when you were a child in your car? You’d stop at the lights and you and your friends or siblings would wave at people in other cars. Do you remember how happy you’d be if the other person smiled and waved back? As children, we needed so little to make us happy right?
As we become adults, we start to believe that we can only be happy if everything is a certain way when in truth, we actually need much less than what we think we want. If you ask people who are much older, they will tell you that you can be perfectly happy without the things you think you need. That is what this article is about, what you do NOT need to be happy.
1. Ideal Circumstances
Look around you at the happiest people. They do not live with a perfect set of circumstances; instead they live with a set of attitudes. When you choose to be positive and grateful for what you have now, this will determine how you live your life. So, from today, start to look for something positive about your day, every day. Some days, you may have to look a little harder, but you will still find something to be grateful for.
2. A Perfect Past
If you let the shadows of the past constantly darken your present and future, happiness will always be out of reach. Just because things did not work out the way you had wanted, it does not mean that your future cannot be just as you have dreamt it to be. In fact, if you talk to some highly successful people, they will tell you that they are stronger where they were broken. That is when you will know what you are really made of.
The dingiest and ugliest prison you will live in is your fear of what other people think. If you wait for the approval of those around you in every decision you make, you can imagine where you will end up. When you are making big decisions in life, remember what you think of yourself and not what others think of you. Don’t let yourself fall into the trap where others make you feel guilty for living your life. As long as you are not harming anyone, you have the right to live your life, your way. Take time every day to spend with yourself, reflect internally and make good decisions.
The great big challenges that life throws at you and overcoming them is what makes life interesting and meaningful. Remember that your life will never be perfect for you to enjoy it the way you want. You will always face challenges and obstacles. These are the things that will get you closer to the perfect life you have envisioned. Use this mantra on yourself every day, “I will live a happy life no matter what I face!”
5. Buckets full of Money
This is probably the trickiest one to look at objectively. Everyone has dreams of having a lot of money. In truth, if we counted our blessings more often, we would be richer than if we counted our money. You should keep the fire of earning money in your mind for sure, but not in your heart. We often get so caught up in making a living that we forget to make a life. Embrace some form of spirituality and learn to live outside the box. Your real measure of wealth is how much you are worth if you lose all your money. Something to think about….
Use the happiness formula where you do your best and appreciate all that you have. Stay clear of the unhappiness formula where you compare yourself to others and what they have. It is great to have an endless supply of money, but at the same time, you should never lose track of the essential things that money can’t buy…..like a smile from your child, a hug from a loved one, a romantic walk in a park…
We should learn how to count our blessings and happiness everyday and not expect to be happy all the time. Choose to be happy today!
